Hills & Dales Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony

A groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, April 21, marked the beginning of a $6 million expansion of Hills and Dales General Hospital

The expansion, which will be done in three phases, will be added on to the hospital that was built in 1960, and renovated several times over the years.

“This expansion will take us well into the future and meet a number of needs for us and the community,” said hospital President and CEO Jean Anthony, noting patient needs have changed over the years and “the hospital made changes to meet them.”

The expansion project involves changes to both the first and second floors of the existing hospital. There will be major upgrades to 12 of the patient rooms to make semi-private rooms in to private rooms with a bathroom and shower. They will be larger to make them visitor friendly with enough room to stay overnight with a patient.

The construction project will also allow for the hospital’s after-hours clinic and other specialty clinics to be relocated from across the street to inside of the hospital complex. The project will create a new gift shop as well as expanding the existing cafeteria on the lower level to provide more dining options and seating capacity.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved a $5.3 million loan in 2016 to help with the $6 million construction project, which is expected to take about 18 months to complete. The rest of the cost of the project — $500,000 — came from fund raising and donations.

“We exceeded that amount. We have received $520,000 in donations and more come in each day,” said Danielle Blaine, who is the hospital’s marketing and foundation director. “The Pinney Foundation pledged $60,000 and the Rawson Foundation pledged $75,000 over the next five years.”

Blaine and hospital board member Pat Curtis each thanked the community for their support and the hospital’s auxiliary.

The hospital’s emergency room handled 6,100 cases, the after-hours clinic saw 5,900 clients, and the physicians saw 38,000 patients over the last year.

The hospital plans to see site work to begin within the next few weeks.
